INTERVIEW: EMILY WITTE

“As much as I avoided this moment, my brand manager bugged me enough to do an interview. I wanted for my new clients to get to know me a little more and for my long-standing clients, you guys can read what you already know.” - Emily Witte, owner of Resoir Salon

Best advice for long-lasting healthy hair?

Nourish your body from the inside out! Hang eucalyptus in your shower. Look after your health, drink plenty of water and don’t packet dye your hair… Ever!

Night beauty and hair routine?

At the moment everything is dry so my hair and skin are lapping up any oils I give them. I wish I had more answers but I am so low maintenance. I brush my hair, put them in braids and lather oils on my skin… from my face to my tippy toes.

What is your #1 hair care tip?

Salt scrub for your scalp. Don’t go to bed with wet hair. Use a leave-in conditioner. Get regular trims.

What do you think is the most common misconception about hair care today?

That you need a million products. You just need to simplify your hair care with the right products.

How often should we wash our hair?

Everyone’s hair is so different but on average 2 times, a week is safe. My hair is now at the stage where I wash it only once a week but when I do I mix it up depending on the type of season. In winter I use Davines Salt Scrub for my scalp with a super moisture intense treatment.

Top 3 products for blonde hair?

Olaplex, Davines Alchemic Silver Conditioner and NOUNOU Hair Mask.

Are masks necessary for our hair routine?

Absolutely!!!!!! The results of masks vary depending on the climate where you live, hair texture and if you colour your hair. But even the most natural hair dyes still have an impact on the condition of the hair and environmental factors damage un-coloured hair. I always tell my clients to assess what their hair is lacking or ask their stylist. Does it need moisture? Does it need protein? Change it up depending on what you have been doing. Have you been on holiday living it up in the European summer - this means a moisture mask gurl. Have you been skiing the slopes of Japan - well you need some protein, my friend?

What or who inspires you?

My partner Mike. No joke.

Best business advice you have received?

If you work at what you love, the rewards are endless.

How did you get into hairdressing?

My sisters! My eldest sister is also a hairdresser, I remember when I was 13 and she was around 18, she came home one day wearing an anklet… I just remember thinking whoah she is so cool, I want her life! I mean that had nothing to do with hair actually haha. My other sister is in fashion and has always influenced my style. So with the two combined, I was destined to do something in a creative industry.

Favourite thing about your job?

I couldn’t list them but it gets me out of bed in the morning!

How important is it to brush our hair?

Oh, oils from your scalp are the best things for us!! Brushing those natural oils through hair before washing is the best treatment we can give our hair.

How do you maintain a balance between home and the salon?

I don’t hahaha any advice is welcome!

How do you start your day?

Being pregnant I always take a few minutes to wake up my body instead of springing out of bed. I don’t set an alarm, I wake up with the sun and this helps it to be a slow wake-up. Usually, around 5.30am I walk my dog Howie followed by having a coffee and breakfast with Mike. Depending on the day of the week I set myself some time for strength training yoga or meditation (not every morning is the same). A shower is essential and then I am at the salon by 7.30am most mornings.

What’s your life mantra?

Learn every day, educate yourself where you can, breathe, and be patient

What’s your favourite salon memory from the past 8 years?

I think it’s meeting the people that I have met. All of my clients have become such close friends and I am so thankful for that

Has your outlook on work-life changed since becoming pregnant?

I have always been very driven, and independent and always wanted to challenge myself to be the best I can be. Becoming a mumma is just an added element. I am so excited to learn from my baby girl and to guide and educate her where I can.

I will have to readjust my work-life balance because I want to be as present as I can be for her. Being the best version of myself will impact her life and a huge part of that is my business. I do believe you can have both.

What are your favourite top 3 products at the moment?

Omg plant-based retinol!! Life-changing for my skin.

I like to research and try all products so I can educate my clients when they ask me about different brands buts at the moment it’s: Davines OI All In One Milk, Sphaera Balance & Volume Shampoo Bar and O&M Power Base Treatment.

What was your motivation to rebrand from Salon W to Resoir?

Originally I wanted to move the salon into a warehouse space and expand the business with health and wellness included. It has been a dream since I was 16 so the rebrand is the beginning of that.

What’s next for Resoir?

Resoir hair range! Launching soon.
