INTERVIEW: SAM RILES

Sam Riles has been a client for years and long standing photographer, and recently she visited the Resoir salon to take some pictures and we asked her a few questions. Read the full interview below.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a self employed lifestyle & wedding photographer & mum to my boy Frankie, who is 3.5 years old. I live in Manly with my partner Max, in our recently renovated apartment just over near the wharf.

What motivated you to start photography and what has it taught you currently?
It's been a life-long love - growing up watching films I think I was always drawn to beautiful imagery and wanted a way to capture things around me. Currently I feel urged to try and capture more of my personal life (outside of paid work). Life is moving way too fast lately and the sentimental side of me wants to remember the little moments with my family in our home.

When and where are you most creative?
I’m most creative at home with music playing and my scrapbooks about. I also love dressing up lately and having fun with my outfits and general self expression. The change in season has been really nice for that!

What does a typical day look like for you?
Water. Coffee. Supplements. Drop off my little boy. Hit the gym for 40 mins then sauna. Come back and do emails and editing. Sometimes I treat myself to some retail therapy when I finish editing a wedding. Dinner at home with my man.

How do certain rituals impact your work?
Recently I realised how important exercising every day is. It’s had a profound impact on my mental and physical health and I’m addicted! It helps me handle the anxiety I’ve been having lately and I’ve noticed my mindset has been stronger.

Where are your favourite spots in Manly?
I love going to the organic grocer in Manly and looking at all their tinctures and remedies. Getting a smoothie at orchard st. Dinner at Bar Tropic by the water.

Best tip: juggling work life balance with kids?
I think everyone is obsessed with finding balance and it’s a real juggle for sure. I recently heard a friend say that they’re embracing the chaos of life and that the pursuit for balance in life is essentially the meaning of life. It resonated with me. I realised there’s never a perfect moment that you’ll reach where everything runs in perfect order. It’s about enjoying the process and accepting the give and take of different priorities throughout your life.

What are you most proud of?
I still pinch myself that I run my own business and have the flexibility to be a young mum too. I love our little boy that we created together. He is the best.

Let's talk about hair... What is your daily routine vs your pampering routine?
I’ve been letting my hair dry naturally after a shower by brushing it back then flicking the ends (because it’s short). When I’m going out I use the davines strong hold gel to recreate the Sharon stone look from Basic Instinct. She is a timeless beauty.

Pampering routine - love all my face creams from Mecca especially this PH balancing cream from Tula. My skin just soaks it up. I also blend oils from perfect potion with almond oil and massage into my skin, makes me feel sexy and worthy of love!

Biggest hair struggle and how did you overcome it?
Changing my hair style 24/7. It’s an ongoing journey but I think short hair is sticking for now!

Do you have any hair hacks?
Dry shampoo when your hair is oily .

Which product from Resoir has impressed you the most?

My absolute fav is the Davines soul shampoo and Davines OI butter as a conditioner. I always get friends and family to try it when they stay over. I’m obsessed and my hair smells amazing as well as silky soft. I also feel like it’s the only shampoo I’ve ever had that properly washes my scalp.

What is one hair product you couldn't live without?

^ above

How do you unwind after a busy day?

1000 puzzles + a movie + a red wine.

What are you currently reading or watching?

I just finished Sunset by Jessie cave and loved it. I also am obsessed with 90’s thrillers.
